Vegan Compost

Our vegan compost adds organic matter to the soil mix, which boosts soil structure and optimizes drainage. This provides a thriving environment for your ZZ plant.

Plus, it’s a natural source of essential plant nutrients, reducing the need for harmful synthetic fertilizers.

Carbon-Negative Biochar

Biochar boosts ZZ plant growth by enhancing nutrient and water retention. It also improves soil porosity, which aids the plant’s root development.

What’s more?
It captures atmospheric carbon dioxide! In fact, every ton of biochar produced removes three tons of CO2 from the carbon cycle.

So, it’s a sustainable, carbon-negative soil amendment — unlike peat moss, coconut coir, perlite, and vermiculite.

Root Boosting Mycorrhizae

Mycorrhizae (mahy-kuh-rahy-zee) are beneficial fungi that improve your ZZ plant roots’ water and nutrient uptake by enhancing their surface area.

This, in turn, improves the plant’s drought tolerance, helping it overcome any delays in the watering schedule.

Step 1: Pre-Moisten

To help your ZZ plant set in well, pre-moisten Rosy before adding it to pots.

How do you do this?
Add Rosy’s ZZ plant soil to a container and water it until the soil holds enough to release a few drops when squeezed.

Step 2: Pot or repot

Take a well-draining container or planter and fill up 1/3 with the pre-moistened ZZ plant soil.

Step 3: Plant

Gently release your ZZ plant from its current soil mix and loosen the root ball. Then, place the plant into your container with pre-moistened Rosy.

Fill the remaining space with more potting soil, leaving an inch at the top for watering.

Step 4: Water

Thoroughly water ZZ plant, letting the excess water drain from the pot’s drainage hole.

After the first watering, we recommend bottom watering (by placing your ZZ plant container in a tray of water). This helps reduce nutrient leaching and keeps the roots uniformly moist.

You can do a top watering occasionally to flush the soil mixture in case of excessive salt buildup.

At Rosy, we maintain eco-friendly processes from production to delivery. Moreover, our entire supply chain has a net negative carbon footprint!

And your Rosy ZZ Plant Soil Mix captures more than 2 kg of CO2 from the carbon cycle!

This is possible since we consciously curate the most sustainable shipping, packaging, and carbon-negative ingredients like biochar.

ZZ Plant Soil & Care Guide

ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an ornamental succulent plant native to Eastern Africa and South Africa — commonly called Zanzibar gem or eternity plant.

Like a snake plant or peace lily, the ZZ plant is low maintenance and can thrive in indirect light or low light conditions. So it’s an ideal indoor plant for any plant lover!

Some popular Z. zamiifolia varieties include:

  • Variegated ZZ plant
  • Raven ZZ plant
  • Lucky Classic ZZ Plant

But what goes into ZZ plant care?

Let’s find out:

1. ZZ Plant Soil

A Zanzibar gem plant can survive in almost any potting medium thanks to its rhizome (an underground stem that produces shoots and roots), which can store water and plant food.

But its root system can’t handle soggy soil.

So, to flourish, this house plant requires a potting soil or potting mix with:

    • Optimal drainage: It should be a fast draining soil mixture that retains some moisture to allow the rhizome to soak up water.
    • Light and fluffy soil: ZZ plant’s soil should be porous and airy, which helps with the rhizome and root development of the plant. Dense soil will hinder the growth of new plants.
    • Good Nutrition: The plant requires adequate nutrients (like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus) despite being a slow grower.

Moreover, although a ZZ plant can survive in cactus soil, the cactus mix probably won’t retain enough moisture to help the indoor plant flourish.

That’s why it’s better to use a potting mix like Rosy, which provides the best soil conditions for ZZ plant growth — unlike cactus soil.

2. Essential ZZ Plant Care Tips

Here are some important ZZ plant care tips:

  • Plant your Zamioculcas zamiifolia in a container with a pot size about 1-2 inches larger than the root ball.
  • Keep your ZZ houseplant in a spot with bright indirect sunlight.
  • Water ZZ plant thoroughly whenever the soil dries out.
  • ZZ plant prefers slightly humid environments. So, you can use a humidifier to overcome dry conditions — even if you use an amended cactus mix.
  • Fertilize the ZZ plant soil in its growing season (spring and summer) to support plant growth.
  • Prune this houseplant to remove any yellow leaves or arching branches. You can use the stem cutting or leaf cutting for ZZ plant propagation.
  • For an enlarged rhizome, overcrowded stems, or a root-bound plant, transplant it into a bigger pot during its growing season.
  • You could also divide the rhizome and plant each division in a new container to propagate ZZ plant and enable new growth.

3. Indicators of Improper Plant Care

When your slow-growing eternity plant doesn’t get the plant care it needs, it may show warning signs like:

  • Yellowing leaves: Yellow leaves can indicate soggy soil or overwatering.
  • Brown leaves: Excessive exposure to direct sunlight may cause leaf curling or browning — move the house plant to a spot with bright indirect light.
  • Dropped plant leaves: This may indicate inadequate watering.
  • Root rot: It can imply overwatering or excessive moisture retention.

Interesting soil seems great.

I’ve transplanted all that I could for about 3 weeks now and all of the plants appear very happy. I enjoyed working with it also. I would definitely plant more of my plants in the soil.

My plants love it!

I’m really happy with this soil mix. I repotted four plants with this mix 2 months ago and my plants are very happy. My monstera has grown 6 new leaves sine repotting. I did major surgery on my jade and it has put out so many new little leaves. I do pick out little mushrooms often but it doesn’t bother me. Will be purchasing again.

Grew a new leaf!

I planted some cuttings from a plant I dropped. At first I was a little apprehensive because the soil is really dark lol….but after 3 weeks she seems to be doing great. She even grew a new leaf 🤗.

Repotting my plants

I received my FIRST order on Saturday. The bag was huge! I repotted my neanthe Bella palm and she is adjusting nicely. Then I used the rest to repot a huge sansevieria that I received last month and which was rootbound. This soil was extremely easy to work with and I managed to transfer my sansevieria into a larger pot with no difficulty. I appreciate the time which the team has taken to answer all of my questions regarding this soil. I am highly recommending and will definitely purchase again

Plants are thriving.

I've been using ROSY soil for a little over a year now, and my plants have never been happier. I've noticed a significant improvement in the overall health of my pothos, with extremely fast growth. It's very easy to work with and provides everything your plant needs to thrive. I was able to use the abundance of growth to propagate more healthy pothos plants - all potted in ROSY. I would recommend this to any plant parent!
