☑ A well-draining soil for calathea care made with Earth Positive ingredients (no peat moss, pumice, or perlite)
☑ Supports good moisture and nutrient retention
☑ Contains abundant organic matter
☑ The best soil to stimulate new plant growth for calatheas

Vegan Compost

We use aged and plant-based compost to provide essential plant nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorus) for your calathea plant.

The organic matter in the compost also helps with aeration, drainage, and preventing root rot.

Plus, it minimizes the need for synthetic fertilizers — which can harm soil microbes and pH levels when used excessively.

Carbon-Negative Biochar

Biochar is the star of Rosy’s calathea potting mix! It enhances aeration, drainage, nutrient retention, and plant root development.

What’s more?

Biochar is carbon negative.

For every ton of biochar produced, three tons of carbon is removed from the emission cycle.

That’s why it’s a better alternative to activated charcoal and unsustainable soil additives like peat moss, pumice, and coco coir.

Root Boosting Mycorrhizae

Rosy’s calathea soil contains plant-friendly fungi known as mycorrhizae (mahy-kuh-rahy-zee).

The benefits?

The fungi enhance water and nutrient access for the plant’s root system.

They also create glomalin, a gum-like substance that further locks in the moisture and nutrients calathea plants need.

Step 1: Pre-Moisten

We recommend moistening Rosy’s calathea soil before use for the best results.

Place your desired amount of the potting soil in a container and spray with water until it releases a few drops when pressed.

Step 2: Pot or repot

Choose a pot with drainage holes (on the side or underside) and fill it 1/3 with pre-moistened Rosy potting soil.

Step 3: Plant

Release your calathea from its current container and remove any soil debris around the plant’s roots.

Next, center the plant in your new pot and fill the remaining space with pre-moistened Rosy soil. Leave an inch of space at the top for easy watering.

Step 4: Water

For the first watering, water your calathea from the top and allow the excess water to drain.

For future watering, we recommend bottom watering. You can water from the top occasionally to flush excess salts and minerals.

Rosy’s entire supply chain has a net negative carbon footprint — from manufacturing to delivery.

How do we do this?

We carefully select the most sustainable packaging and shipping options. Plus, we use low-carbon and carbon-negative ingredients (like biochar) for our potting mix.

In fact, each bag of Rosy soil captures 2 kg of CO2 from the carbon emissions cycle!

Calathea Soil & Plant Care Guide

Calathea houseplants are beautiful plants with colorful, sometimes variegated leaves.

This tropical plant genus includes many gorgeous calathea varieties, like:

  • Calathea ornata (Pinstripe calathea or Pinstripe plant)
  • Calathea orbifolia (Prayer plant or Maranta)
  • Calathea rufibarba (Furry feather calathea or Velvet calathea)
  • Calathea lancifolia (Rattlesnake calathea or Rattlesnake plant)
  • Calathea roseopicta (Rose painted calathea or Calathea dottie)
  • Calathea makoyana (Peacock plant)
  • Calathea zebrina (Zebra plant)
  • Calathea lietzei (Calathea white fusion)
  • Calathea veitchiana (Calathea medallion)
  • The kicker?

Calatheas have specific requirements growers must meet, like moist soil, distilled water, high humidity, and indirect sunlight.

Here are some calathea care tips for growing this fussy houseplant:

    1. Choosing the Best Soil for Calatheas

    Calathea soil should have:

    • Plenty of aeration, so the root system has space to develop.
    • Good drainage to prevent root rot and wilting. However, there should be sufficient moisture retention to keep the soil moist and provide enough water for the plant.
    • High nutrient content to encourage new growth.

Moreover, choosing a calathea soil mix with sustainable amendments (biochar, worm castings, orchid bark, etc.) is best. Avoid mixes with unsustainable additives like perlite, peat moss, coconut coir, and vermiculite.

    We recommend:

A well-draining soil mix like Rosy’s calathea soil. It has everything your calathea plant needs, and it’s eco-friendly.

    2. Providing the Perfect Lighting for Calatheas

Keep your calathea houseplants in a spot with low to bright indirect light — they prefer low-light conditions and do poorly in direct sunlight.

How do you know if your calathea needs low or bright indirect light?

Check the color of the calathea leaves:

    • Calathea varieties with darker leaves prefer minimal indirect light or deep shade.
    • Brighter green, rosy, or purple calathea leaves can thrive with medium to bright indirect sunlight (but not direct sunlight).

    3. Watering Calathea

Follow our handy tips when watering calatheas:

    • Calathea plants enjoy moist soil, so water them when the top 1-2 inches feel dry. This will help you avoid underwatering and overwatering your calathea.
    • Use a pot with drainage holes so the excess water can flow out.
    • Tap water could cause brown leaf tips on your calathea indoor plant. To resolve this, dechlorinate your tap water by letting it sit overnight. Alternatively, use distilled water.

Did you know the plant’s pot affects moisture retention?

An unglazed terracotta pot can wick away water, causing moist soil to dry faster — this can help if you tend to overwater. But if you want to keep the soil moist, use a different type of pot.

    4. Creating a Humid Environment for Calathea

Since it’s a tropical plant, calathea plant care requires warmth and humidity. It may develop brown leaf edges when kept in low humidity.

    How can you improve humidity?

Use a humidifier or terrarium to create high humidity levels for your calathea.

    Interesting soil seems great.

I’ve transplanted all that I could for about 3 weeks now and all of the plants appear very happy. I enjoyed working with it also. I would definitely plant more of my plants in the soil.

    Great Drainage

Very good aeration and drainage, I tend to over water and because of the excellent drainage me and my plants are on very good terms.

    My plants love it!

I’m really happy with this soil mix. I repotted four plants with this mix 2 months ago and my plants are very happy. My monstera has grown 6 new leaves sine repotting. I did major surgery on my jade and it has put out so many new little leaves. I do pick out little mushrooms often but it doesn’t bother me. Will be purchasing again.

    Grew a new leaf!

I planted some cuttings from a plant I dropped. At first I was a little apprehensive because the soil is really dark lol….but after 3 weeks she seems to be doing great. She even grew a new leaf 🤗.

    Repotting my plants

I received my FIRST order on Saturday. The bag was huge! I repotted my neanthe Bella palm and she is adjusting nicely. Then I used the rest to repot a huge sansevieria that I received last month and which was rootbound. This soil was extremely easy to work with and I managed to transfer my sansevieria into a larger pot with no difficulty. I appreciate the time which the team has taken to answer all of my questions regarding this soil. I am highly recommending and will definitely purchase again

    Plants are thriving.

I've been using ROSY soil for a little over a year now, and my plants have never been happier. I've noticed a significant improvement in the overall health of my pothos, with extremely fast growth. It's very easy to work with and provides everything your plant needs to thrive. I was able to use the abundance of growth to propagate more healthy pothos plants - all potted in ROSY. I would recommend this to any plant parent!
