Vegan Compost

Our aged compost is plant-based and creates a luscious environment for your begonia.

How?

It boosts soil structure, offers abundant organic matter, and enhances drainage.

It’s also a natural source of vital nutrients for your begonia. This reduces the need for synthetic fertilizer, which can harm microbes and decrease the soil pH.

Carbon-Negative Biochar

Biochar is the foundation of our potting soil. It enhances begonia plant growth by encouraging root development and increasing water and nutrient retention.

But that’s not all.

Biochar helps trap atmospheric carbon dioxide! Three tons of carbon dioxide are removed from the carbon cycle for every ton of biochar generated.

This makes Rosy’s begonia soil a superior alternative to regular potting soil (which often contains unsustainable additives like coco coir and peat moss).

Root Boosting Mycorrhizae

Mycorrhizae (mahy-kuh-rahy-zee) are begonia-friendly fungi that increase your plant’s access to water and essential nutrients.

How do the fungi do that?

They bond with the begonia flowering plant’s root system. The fungi also release glomalin, a gum-like substance that locks in nutrients and moisture.

Step 1: Pre-Moisten

Moisten your Rosy begonia soil with some water until it holds enough to release a few drops when pressed.

Step 2: Pot or re-pot

Get a pot with drainage holes and fill it up 1/3 with the moist begonia soil.

Step 3: Plant

Carefully release your flowering plant from its current soil mix.

Gently loosen the root ball, dislodging any debris, before centering the begonia into your pot. Then, fill the pot with moist Rosy soil, leaving an inch at the top for watering.

Step 4: Water

Water your potted begonia plant carefully, allowing the excess water to drain.

For the next watering, use bottom watering (by placing the pot in a container/tray of water) to moisten the soil consistently.

Periodically water from the top to flush out accumulated mineral and salt deposits in the soil.

Rosy maintains excellent eco-friendly processes. And one of the most exciting parts is that our entire supply chain has a net negative carbon footprint!

Our Rosy begonia soil captures over 2kg of CO2 from the carbon cycle.

How?

We intentionally use the most sustainable carbon-negative ingredients (like biochar), packaging, and shipping.

Begonia Soil & Plant Care Guide

Begonias are perennial succulents from tropical climates found in Central America, South Asia, and Africa.

According to the American Begonia Society, this tropical plant has 2,050+  species that fall under four main types:

  • Fibrous begonia (wax begonia, bedding begonias): Fibrous wax begonias have beautiful flowers with green or bronze foliage. Wax begonias are durable and ever-blooming plants.
  • Cane begonia (angel wing begonia, polka dot begonia): Cane begonia is a sturdy plant with pointy teardrop leaves, similar to the spotted begonia variety — polka dot begonia (Begonia maculata.) These plants typically have small pink, red, or white flowers.
  • Tuberous begonia: The tuberous begonia variety (grown as annuals) has large tropical-hued flowers.
  • Rhizomatous begonia (rex begonia): Rhizomatous begonia has showy foliage with fuzzy, colorful leaves.

We’ll explore everything you should know about nurturing this tropical plant:

1. The Best Begonia Potting Mix

A begonia plant needs:

  • Well-draining soil mix to avoid root rot or stem rot.
  • Nutrient-rich soil (with compost or leaf mold) for essential nutrients.
  • Airy potting mix (with biochar or orchid bark) to help the roots breathe.

Wondering which soil fits these requirements?

Rosy’s begonia soil! It’s perfect for any houseplant, whether bedding begonias or rhizomatous begonias.

2. How to Grow a Begonia Plant

Follow our begonia care tips to grow healthy plants:

  • Begonias don’t require a lot of soil, so use a pot that looks small for the begonia’s size.
  • Grow your indoor plant from a begonia tuber (bulbous modified stems) in a small pot.
  • Plant begonia tubers or rhizomes 1 foot apart in flower beds and closer together in hanging baskets.
  • Apply organic liquid fertilizer on the begonia tuber or plant to promote growth.
  • Keep growing begonias indoors, away from direct sunlight during the growing season (spring). However, begonia varieties need partial shade or soft light to develop full blooms.
  • Avoid watering your growing begonias with cold or tap water (it’s high in minerals). Instead, use distilled water.
  • Water the edges of the tuber only when the potting mix is dry. Overwatering or soggy soil can cause root rot and fungal diseases, like stem rot or powdery mildew on the leaf and flower.
  • Want to increase humidity for your indoor plant? Use a humidifier and watch your rex begonia or other varieties flourish.
  • Avoid misting your begonia to prevent powdery mildew on leaves. Use a fungicide if mildew occurs.
  • Begonia care includes dealing with common pests like mealybugs and white flies. Use insecticide soaps, neem oil, or rubbing alcohol to deal with these common pests.

3. Begonia Propagation

You can grow begonias from pre-purchased seeds, tubers, rhizomes, or roots.

But for begonia propagation, use a stem or leaf cutting.

Here’s how:

  1. Take a leaf cutting or stem cutting and root it in water before transferring it to soil. Keep the container in partial shade (away from direct sun).
  2. Alternatively, directly plant the cutting in a pot filled with Rosy soil and keep it away from direct sunlight.

Interesting soil seems great.

I’ve transplanted all that I could for about 3 weeks now and all of the plants appear very happy. I enjoyed working with it also. I would definitely plant more of my plants in the soil.

My plants love it!

I’m really happy with this soil mix. I repotted four plants with this mix 2 months ago and my plants are very happy. My monstera has grown 6 new leaves sine repotting. I did major surgery on my jade and it has put out so many new little leaves. I do pick out little mushrooms often but it doesn’t bother me. Will be purchasing again.

Grew a new leaf!

I planted some cuttings from a plant I dropped. At first I was a little apprehensive because the soil is really dark lol….but after 3 weeks she seems to be doing great. She even grew a new leaf 🤗.

Repotting my plants

I received my FIRST order on Saturday. The bag was huge! I repotted my neanthe Bella palm and she is adjusting nicely. Then I used the rest to repot a huge sansevieria that I received last month and which was rootbound. This soil was extremely easy to work with and I managed to transfer my sansevieria into a larger pot with no difficulty. I appreciate the time which the team has taken to answer all of my questions regarding this soil. I am highly recommending and will definitely purchase again

Plants are thriving.

I've been using ROSY soil for a little over a year now, and my plants have never been happier. I've noticed a significant improvement in the overall health of my pothos, with extremely fast growth. It's very easy to work with and provides everything your plant needs to thrive. I was able to use the abundance of growth to propagate more healthy pothos plants - all potted in ROSY. I would recommend this to any plant parent!
